Raiders jerseys include artwork related to Reconciliation Public Holiday which occurred on Monday, 1 Juni 2020.
Reconciliation Day is the first day that the ACT issued a holiday. The ACT Legislative Assembly voted on Thursday 14 September 2017 to approve the bill that would amend Australia’s Holidays Act. It has received support from three parties. It commemorates the 50th anniversary the 1967 Australian Referendum. National Reconciliation Week starts with this holiday.
Australia demanded two amendments of its constitution to help Indigenous Australians back in 1967. These were supported by 90.77%. This was sufficient to allow them to be adopted in all six States. They also amended section 51 (xxvi) and 127. These modifications allowed Aboriginal Australians for inclusion in the determination the population. Also, the Federal parliament was empowered to make specific legislation regarding this racial category.
The amendments did grant voting rights for Aboriginal people, but it didn’t give them citizenship. Although most discriminatory laws, both federally and in states, that targeted Aboriginal people were repealed after 1967, they did not allow them citizenship.
The Indigenous Jersey Round 12 will be worn by the Raiders NRL squad in 2020.
